I selected these two photos because I think they encapsulate what it is to be a soldier.

This first image shows the informality and exuberance of youth. The army is made of of youths and films often hide that fact by populating their imaginary armies with men. This is dad’s platoon and he is their sergeant. Yet his was only 21.

Such is the life of a soldier.
